The Board of Visitors spring meeting will feature updates from university leadership, opportunities for discussion around key priorities, and time for connection among board members. The agenda is designed to support meaningful engagement and thoughtful conversation as the Board continues its work in support of Carolina.

Class sessions

  • EDU 529- 11a.m. This course explores the history of American schools to help students better understand contemporary education, policies and debates.
  • PHIL 143- 2p.m. This course explores philosophical questions raised by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and biological augmentation. Attendees should expect an interactive discussion and may receive a brief read-ahead.
  • HST 362- 2p.m. This course examines the role of baseball in American history, using the game to explore themes such as immigration, labor, race, patriotism and cultural identity. This particular class session will focus on baseball in the 1980s.
  • AMST 223- 9:30a.m. This course examines past and present scandals in U.S. sports and how they reflect broader societal forces such as capitalism, competition and surveillance.

Immediately following the Student Career Services Reception, our BOV reception will be in the Basketball Museum. Enjoy looking at basketball memorabilia, including championship trophies and rings, while connecting with other BOV members.

During the reception, we’ll honor the outgoing Class of 2026 with a short ceremony and a ceremonial signing of the pledge.

Don’t miss remarks by former star basketball player, Tyler Zeller ’12.  During his Carolina career, Tyler won ACC Player-of-the-Year honors and Academic All-America of the Year for men’s basketball in the same season (2012).  He also was a first-round pick and played eight seasons in the NBA. He is currently working with Jones Angell as an Analyst for Tar Heel Sports Network and consulting for the Rams Club.

Also, we’ll be bringing back the spirit contest- as you remember in the Fall wearing your best blues can win you some fun UNC prizes. The contest this meeting is for your best UNC gameday gear and contestants will be selected by our Fall winners.

 

Attire is Carolina Casual (business attire, upscale gameday).

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center translates the discoveries of Carolina faculty and students into experiences that engage the public and extend the reach of the University. In this presentation, Todd Boyette will highlight how next-generation technology, including an LED dome, allows Morehead to immerse its local and global audiences in scientific discovery that sparks curiosity and learning.

AI and the Future of Knowledge 11:30 a.m.

How is artificial intelligence transforming how we create, access, and use knowledge? This panel brings together three of Carolina’s academic leaders—Dean Stan Ahalt, Interim Dean Diane Kelly, and Vice Provost for AI Jeff Bardzell—to discuss the evolving role of data science and information science in an AI-driven world. The conversation will explore implications for research, education, and society, and how Carolina is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation and the new School of Data and Information Sciences.
