The Carolina Center for Public Service engages and supports the faculty, students, and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. The Center supports engaged scholarship and service, working together with the community to create collaborative and interdisciplinary solutions to local and global challenges. Students Justin Williford and Jenna Tan and faculty member Anna Agbe-Davies will join Center director Lynn Blanchard in sharing their experiences and perspectives of public service at Carolina. Noon | Taking care of our students: A look at student health and safety at Carolina
Last year, Campus Health and its Counseling and Psychological Services {CAPS) experienced more than 82,000 visits, and the pharmacies dispensed more than 62,000 prescriptions, showing its significant impact on students, post-docs and their spouses and partners. It’s all a part of caring for the Carolina community. We will look at both student health and safety in this presentation that was among the requests from recent BOV surveys. 1:15 p.m. | Choline: A UNC professor’s discovery
Steven Zeisel and his research team focus on the essential nutrient choline and are working on several epidemiology studies that examine the relationship between diet, the genes they study and the risk for disease. Zeisel comes to us from the UNC Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis which focuses on how genetics and the environment affect an individual’s requirement for and responses to nutrients. Dr. Zeisel has predicted that one day soon, health professionals will use the science discovered at the Institute to provide nutrition recommendations individually tailored to their patients.
