Morehead-Cain – global summer internships and their impact
The Morehead-Cain was the first undergraduate scholarship program in the world to offer a robust summer enrichment program, offering students opportunities in outdoor leadership, public service, private enterprise, and inquiry and exploration. These experiences—along with the ability to study abroad and access to Discovery Fund grants—provide scholars hands-on leadership in the global classroom. We will hear how these Carolina students have made an impact on the world and built on these experiences to enrich the Carolina community.

A conversation with the author – The Queen of Katwe: One Girl’s Triumphant Path to Becoming a Chess Champion
The Disney movie, Queen of Katwe, tells the story of a young girl, Phiona Mutesi, who trains to become a world chess champion. Her experiences take her from the slums of Uganda to the Chess Olympiad in Siberia. The movie, currently in theatres, stars Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o and Golden Globes-nominated David Oyelowo. It is all based on the book by Tim Crothers, a former Sports Illustrated writer, who has taught in the UNC School of Media and Journalism 15 years. We are excited to have Crothers join us for lunch just as the film hits the big screen. He will talk about Mutesi and about the movie with two of the hottest stars in Hollywood.
After the presentation, Crothers will sign copies of his book that will be available to purchase for $20, with proceeds going to Katwe.

Brooklyn Rider with Anne Sofie von Otter, mezzo-soprano
“One of the wonders of contemporary music.” – National Public Radio
At 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, Memorial Hall
The trailblazing string quartet, Brooklyn Rider, hailed by Strings Magazine as the future of chamber music, presents eclectic repertoire in bewitching performances that draw rave reviews from classical, rock and world music critics alike. Through visionary programming and dynamic global collaborations, their “down-to-earth demeanor…demystifies contemporary classical music and invites everyone into the tent” (Time Out New York). Eminent Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter’s vocal beauty and voracious artistic sensibility have resulted in one of the longest and most successful careers of any classical singer today. The members of Brooklyn Rider consider UNC their second home, having appeared here in various forms in nine performances over as many seasons while working closely with students and faculty.
