We look forward to spending time with our new members and introducing you to your Board of Visitors experience. In addition to learning about the work of the Board and expectations, you will also hear from committee chairs who will provide information to help you decide on your BOV committee assignment.

Ackland Art Museum, 101 South Columbia Street, Chapel Hill, NC
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. BOV Reception

In January, the Ackland announced its largest gift ever – an $8 million endowment and 134 original Dutch and Flemish drawings – including seven Rembrandts. The entire gift totals $25 million. And with that gift from the Lena and Sheldon Peck collection, the Ackland became the first public university art museum in the United States to own a collection of drawings by Rembrandt and only the second university art museum in the nation to do so. To protect them, only a few of the pieces are on display at any one time. Also during the evening, we will offer a special opportunity for interested participants to spend time with Associate Curator of Asian Art Bradley Bailey in his work space upstairs.

Music will be provided by Robert “Griffanzo” Giffin, pianist, composer, singer/songwriter, teaching and recording musician.

9:30 a.m. Changing lives through UNC Horizons

This past April, 24 years after its humble beginnings, UNC Horizons unveiled a new state-of-the-art facility to treat women and their children under one roof. UNC Horizons is a world leader in treating women with substance use disorders and breaking the cycles of inter-generational trauma and addiction by treating women and their children together. Women being served by the program can walk in, receive counseling, case management, medical care, child care and even housing through this program that is not exactly what you would expect to find at a University. We will take a virtual tour of the new facility and meet some of the people being served under this one-stop shop.

11:45 a.m. How Carolina is transforming entrepreneurship

Just a few months ago, the University announced an $18 million gift from the Shuford family that will more than double the size of Carolina’s nationally recognized undergraduate entrepreneurship program. The largest single one-time gift by a living individual or family to the College of Arts and Sciences will help meet the demand of students who want to enroll in entrepreneurship courses or the minor in entrepreneurship and will support twice the number of student internships at entrepreneurial firms worldwide. Students and staff will join us to look at how Carolina is transforming entrepreneurship.
